چکیده

This note describes how a future Fermilab proton driver [1] based on TESLA superconducting linac modules can perform as both the source of protons to produce the muons and as the accelerator of the muons to be used for a neutrino factory or muon collider. Recent advances in muon cooling [2] have the promise of muon emittances that are compatible with the 1300 MHz accelerating structures that are the basis for the ILC design. In the design described here, H ions are accelerated to 8 GeV in the superconducting Linac, then stripped, stored and bunched in a ring while the Linac cavities are rephased for muon accleleration. Then the protons are extracted from the ring to produce pions and muons which are cooled in a few hundred meters, accelerated to a few GeV and injected into the Linac at the 1 β = point for acceleration to add 7 GeV. By recirculating the muons in the constant frequency section of such a proton driver Linac, even higher energies can be achieved quickly so that losses from muon decay are minimized. By adding additional refrigeration and RF power, the repetition rate of the Linac can be increased to make large increases in the average flux of a neutrino factory and the average luminosity of a muon collider.

2GeV SUPERCONDUCTING MUON LINAC

A muon collider as well as a neutrino factory requires a large number of muons with a kinetic energy of 50GeV or more. Muon survival demands a high gradient linac. The large transverse and longitudinal emittance of the muon beam coming from a muon cooling system implies the need for a large acceptance, acceleration system. These two requirements point clearly to a linac based on superconducting...

A Shared Superconducting Linac for Protons and Muons

It has been shown how a superconducting Linac that was designed to be a high-intensity proton driver for Fermilab [1] can be modified and augmented to also serve as the muon accelerating section for a neutrino factory [2]. In this report we consider the same approach, where the Linac does double duty, but with the idea that the Linac and other parameters are chosen to serve only as a neutrino f...

A Superconductive, Low Beta Single Gap Cavity for a High Intensity Proton Linac

The TRASCO project for nuclear waste transmutation [1] requires a 5-100 MeV linac for acceleration of a 30 mA proton beam. Generally, room temperature Drift Tube Linac structures are used in this energy range; however, since the high duty cycle required for high current beams implies a very high power density on the resonators walls, the superconducting solution would offer many advantages. European Organisation for Nuclear Research Cern - Ps Division

In view of a possible evolution of the CERN accelerator complex towards higher proton intensities, a 2.2 GeV H linac with 4 MW beam power has been designed, for use in connection with an accumulator and compressor ring as proton driver of a muon-based Neutrino Factory. The high-energy part of this linac can use most of the RF equipment (superconducting cavities and klystrons) from the LEP colli...

Muon Phase Rotation Using an Induction Linac*

The proposed neutrino factory requires that the muons produced by the decay of pions and kaons produced by a target be phase-rotated before they can be cooled and then accelerated. This report describes a muon phaserotation system that employs an induction acceleration system. The phase-rotation system consists of a 100meter long induction accelerator, a mini-cooling system with magnetic flux r...
